First, yes….every PNM going through sorority recruitment should plan on securing a rush tote before arriving on campus!
As you start packing for sorority rush (see our rush packing tips here), plan on packing your rush tote, too!
What is a Sorority Rush Tote?
Your rush tote will be your lifeline during recruitment weeks! In essence, it is a large bag where you will keep everything you need in between party rounds!
As you move from house to house between sorority recruitment party rounds, you will need to freshen up, change shoes, or grab an umbrella. Your rush tote will hold everything you need!
What Should I look for in a Rush Tote?
- Make sure it is waterproof! Nylon totes like these are great.
- It has to have a zipper! You want to look organized an pulled together at all times….having personal items spilling out is not good!
- Look for a large bag – you will put more in there than you think!
- Keep it inexpensive. Rush totes DO NOT go inside the houses with you! They stay outside in the recruitment tents or on the curb with your Rho Chi. While pilfering and theft is uncommon during recruitment, just know that your bag will be unattended during rounds!
See this photo below?!?! Make sure this is not your recruitment experience! Be prepared and you will be your BEST! Take your tote!
What Should I Pack In My Rush Tote?
- Flip flops! Your party rounds may start at 8AM and could run until 7PM. Give your feet a break between rounds with simple flip flops. Something like this works. Don’t pack leather Tory’s! Remember, it could be raining and you need something super waterproof! PRO TIP: We recommend putting your flip flops in a plastic Target bag to keep your tote interior clean.
- Face mask (hey, this is a COVID recruitment season!)
- Umbrella and rain poncho
- Feminine products
- Charging cord and portable charging battery
- Gum and or a travel toothbrush & toothpaste
- Refillable water bottle (use it often!) with a screw on top to prevent spills. We like this one.
- Granola bar or power bar
- Brush, lip gloss
- Your school ID and room key

Do NOT Pack These……
- Lots of cash or credit cards. Tuck a twenty dollar bill in a side pocket for an emergency.
- Jewelry: Wear it and plan to keep it on during all the rounds! Don’t take it off and leave it in your rush tote.
- iPads and other tech gear. You won’t have time to use them on party days, and there is no need to tempt a pilferer or weigh down your bag.
