Springtime and yummy sweets go hand in hand. Today, I’m sharing with you a secret recipe for no-fail French Buttercream Frosting!
French Buttercream Frosting is so easy, rich and creamy. It is THE perfect frosting and is a tasty backdrop for super cute sprinkles like these!
Truly, it is the only vanilla frosting you will ever need for cakes! Your kitchen will smell like a bakery after you whip up a batch!
Last week on the Spring Thyme Recipes and Styles Blog Hop, I shared with you my recipe for Easter Brunch Punch.
This week, it’s all about the frosting! When we tailgate, I always like to have a sweet treat on hand. This frosting can be made the day before the big game, so all you do is frost & go before the tailgate. It is PERFECT for Easter parties, birthday cakes, etc.
I’ve had this recipe in my recipe tin for over 17 years! The recipe tin and I go waaaay back. As a young stay at home mom, one of my main goals was to fill the tin to the brim with delicious recipes for my family. Here’s the deal: most of these recipes were “borrowed” from my mother, grandmother and her sisters, and my mother’s cousins. These fine Alabama ladies taught me how to cook; I moved beyond my Hamburger Helper territory and into the realm of scratch cooking! I aimed for handwritten recipes from friends and family. Mission accomplished!
Mind you, I had GOBS stored on my computer, but there was something so old fashioned about written recipe cards. You’ll notice the one hanging out a little…it was written by my Great Aunt Una’s…..my grandmother’s sister, both of whom are now with the Lord. The history in each card is simply priceless to me.
One of my treasured recipes hails from my Love Circle friend, Betsy. As a young couple, Copa and I quickly found that our social life revolved around our friends from our Methodist church. We attended a couple’s Sunday School class with other young parents ; it was called New Beginnings. So appropriate, right? We moms from SUMC gathered for Love Circle meetings once a month on Friday mornings for food and fellowship. This was truly the summertime of my life.
That’s where I met Besty: at Love Circle! Betsy is SUPER crafty and a heck of a good cook. One year, she hosted a few Love Circle girls in her home for cake decorating classes. Our children (most were pre-school age) would roam and play while we learned Betsy’s secrets at her kitchen counter. Such warm memories!
You see, in Betsy’s B.C. days (before children!), she worked in a well known bakery. Seriously, everyone LOVES these bakeries! Betcha you’ve been in one if you live in the South! 🙂 How lucky was she to actually get the behind the scenes down-low on recipes, tips, etc?! So. Lucky.
And, Betsy was a giver.
She shared ’em all with us! She gave us her secret recipe for French Buttercream Frosting:
BOOM. There it is….in Betsy’s familiar penmanship. Can you see the grease stains and sugar?!? Yep, this recipe is tried & true in our home!
French Buttermilk Frosting Recipe Tips:
- You must us Fliechman’s Light margarine. No substitutes! Trust me on this.
- The butter flavoring can be used in box cake mix batter for a homemade taste. 🙂
- Make sure you use shortening.
The ingredients are super simple – but don’t deviate from her instructions!

Once you whip up the ingredients, you will have a divine, fragrant vanilla frosting!
Note: if you are looking for a firm frosting for cookies, you may want to consider royal icing instead. French Buttercream Frosting is a soft base frosting that does not harden. It is a rich, creamy, melt in your mouth kind of frosting!
The party isn’t over, my friends! Make sure you over to my friend Marsha’s at M Jones Style – she’s next on our Spring Thyme Recipes and Style Blog Hop!
