Sorority recruitment is right around the corner! Today, I’m sharing with you 3 Things To Do Before Sorority Recruitment Begins. The sisters in the houses have been prepping for months. Literally! At large SEC campuses where recruitment is very competitive, the girls began having recruitment workshops last January just to get ready for the Fall 2017 Recruitment! They are getting ready, and so should you. Throw on those Jack’s, and let’s do this! (affiliate)
I talk a lot here about maximizing your options in order to have a successful rush. Planning ahead and managing expectations are two BIG components to master in order to maximize your options. Let’s do this!
3 Things To Do Before Sorority Recruitment
IDENTIFY YOUR RUSH CONFIDANT
Every PNM needs one person they can confide in during recruitment. Find someone you will be able to trust 150% not to gossip as you share details and seek advice during the week. This could be your mother, aunt, sister, older friend, dad, etc. The key is to find someone other than a friend who graduated with you AND someone who is not participating in the same recruitment with you.
Friends who graduated with you, even your BFF, may not have your best interest at hand when push comes to shove. Let me be clear: recruitment is competitive, regardless of your institution. Jealousy can rear it’s ugly head during rush week, and this is just something you do not need to deal with during such an emotional week.
Find a friend from church, or from a club sports team, or another school…..just make sure it is not someone who graduated with you! You need to separate yourself a few degrees from your friend circles from high school.
Why would you not want to select someone who is going through exactly the same experience as you are and at the same school? Well, remember jealousy? Someone who is going through rush WITH you has their own agenda. You need to keep your party card list close to the vest – never discuss excitement over seeing certain houses on your party card or disappointments when one you didn’t feel at home in house, only to see it show up on your card. Rumors among PNMs move super fast during rush; you don’t want ANYTHING getting back to a sister in a house. Remember tent talk?
Bottom line, pick someone who is not going thru recruitment with you!
You spent a ton of time shopping and packing for sorority recruitment. Spend just as much time thinking about who would be a good person to lean on during rush.
Cee Cee picked a friend of hers who was a year older, had attended a different high school, and who was in a sorority at another university. She offered Cee Cee advice 24/7 via texts and phone calls.
Each day, as you receive your party card list, you will need someone to talk over your options with, share thoughts, excitements and disappointments. Discretion is key. I cannot stress this enough!
MAKE YOUR INVOLVEMENT LIST
What extracurricular activities or clubs does your college or university offer that sound fun or fulfilling to you- aside from Greek life? Visit their website, and make a list of each and every club that sounds interesting to you.
As you go through recruitment, you may find that Greek life is just not for you, and that’s ok. You will have a list of activities to move forward with after rush.
Or, there are rare cases where a girl does not maximize her options and does not receive a bid. Again, this is very rare, however having a back up list of really great clubs and organizations in your back pocket can fill that social gap. Even legacies are not immune from party round cuts.
It may surprise you to know that Greek women are heavily involved in campus life organizations. If you receive a bid and pledge, make sure to round out your collegiate experience by selecting a club or activity in addition to your sorority obligations. Having a ready made list will narrow down your options!
BRUSH UP ON YOUR RUSH CONVERSATION TIPS
Practice, practice, practice! Role play with friends, your mom, anyone at all! Did you know that when a house holds a recruitment workshop, they spend hours role playing possible conversation starters and strategies? They begin looking at PNM lists in April, and take note of your activities, alumnae recs, hometown, etc.
They are doing their homework on you, make sure you do the same!
Write down all of the houses on campus who are participating in Panhellenic recruitment. Research their philanthropy, etc. Have a general awareness of their missions and civic community service.
Most importantly, head over to Sorority Rush Conversation Tips – you will really be a step ahead! If you are a sorority legacy, make sure you read this as you brush up on conversation tips. 🙂
